Aural Landscapes

Site-Specific Sound Art

Aural Landmarks is a participatory sound art project that captures and reinterprets the acoustic identity of places. Environmental recordings submitted by participants are analyzed with custom software and translated into musical structures. These structures are converted into MIDI data and developed into musical scores.

Musicians perform these compositions at the original recording locations, creating a dialogue between the place, its sounds, and their musical interpretation. In this way, everyday soundscapes are transformed into site-specific performances that reveal hidden rhythms and tonalities within the environment.

The project explores listening as an artistic practice. While everyday perception often filters out background noise, Aural Landmarks encourages a broader awareness of the sonic environment. By translating environmental sound into music, the work invites audiences to rediscover familiar spaces through attentive listening.

The resulting performances and scores are documented and shared online, creating an open archive of place-based sound compositions.
